How Odia Families Observe the Festivals of June

Savitri Amavasya

Savitri Amavasya honours the devotion of Savitri and is an important vrata for married women in Odisha. The worship is traditionally performed with prayers for the husband’s health and family welfare.

Women may fast until the puja is completed. Fruit, soaked chuda, coconut and a simple vegetarian meal are suitable after the vrata, according to household tradition.

  1. Bathe early and clean the puja ghara.
  2. Draw a small Jhoti or Chita near the worship area.
  3. Light a diya and remember Savitri, Satyavan and Yama.
  4. Offer flowers, fruit, water and sacred thread.
  5. Perform arati and distribute prasad after the prayer.

Puja items: Diya, flowers, sacred thread, sindoor, incense, water, coconut, banana and seasonal fruit.

Some families worship near a banyan tree, while others complete the entire vrata at home. The method followed by the family elders is generally given preference.

Nirjala Ekadashi

Nirjala Ekadashi is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and is traditionally considered a demanding vrata. The purpose is prayer and self-discipline, not physical harm.

A waterless fast is unsuitable for many people during Odisha’s hot and humid June weather. Those unable to observe it safely may take water, fruit or milk and avoid rice, wheat, pulses, onion, garlic and heavy food.

  1. Take a morning bath and make a suitable vrata resolution.
  2. Light a diya before Lord Vishnu or Lord Jagannath.
  3. Offer tulasi leaves, flowers, fruit and clean water.
  4. Recite Vishnu names or listen to Vishnu Sahasranama.
  5. Perform evening arati and complete parana on Dwadashi.

Puja items: Vishnu or Jagannath image, diya, tulasi leaves, flowers, incense, coconut, banana and water.

Many households also donate drinking water, fruit or food to people in need during this summer observance.

Raja Parba

Raja Parba celebrates womanhood, seasonal renewal and the rest traditionally given to Mother Earth. Agricultural work involving the soil is paused, and girls and women are encouraged to enjoy leisure and family time.

Poda pitha is strongly associated with Raja, though families may also prepare manda pitha, kakara pitha or arisa pitha. Swings and traditional games remain popular in both villages and towns.

  1. Clean and decorate the home before Pahili Raja.
  2. Prepare a safe swing and decorate it with flowers.
  3. Offer flowers, water and pitha in honour of Mother Earth.
  4. Avoid digging, ploughing or unnecessarily disturbing the soil.
  5. Share festive food and spend time with family members.

Puja items: Flowers, diya, clean water, betel leaf where customary, seasonal fruit and homemade pitha.

On the day following the three Raja days, some households perform Basumati Snana by respectfully bathing a grinding stone representing Mother Earth.

Deba Snana Purnima

Deba Snana Purnima begins an important phase of the annual Jagannath temple calendar. Families who cannot travel to Puri may offer a simple ceremonial bath and prayer to their household deities.

A light vegetarian bhoga such as kheeri, fruit or pitha may be prepared. Home worship should remain simple and should not attempt to reproduce restricted temple rituals.

  1. Clean the puja ghara and arrange the deities respectfully.
  2. Light a diya and offer flowers.
  3. Symbolically offer a small amount of clean or scented water.
  4. Present fruit, kheeri or another vegetarian bhoga.
  5. Perform arati and share the prasad with the family.

Puja items: Diya, flowers, sandalwood paste, clean water, incense, coconut, banana and kheeri.

At Puri, the ceremonial bathing is performed on the Snana Bedi with 108 pitchers of water. Afterward, the deities enter Anabasara, and many devotees visit the Alarnath Temple at Brahmagiri during the period without regular darshan.
